Spotlight: Fray

Some people need adventure, some people need excitement, Sarah of Fray needs to make stuff. And I can certainly relate to that. I'll never forget my first 'conversation' with Sarah. She purchased a necklace from my shop and after a bit of time wrote me a message inquiring about where it was. After informing her it had been delivered, we were both sad to think about how it could have mysteriously disappeared. Hopefully she is still enjoying it to this day after later finding it mixed in with a pile of newspaper waiting to be recycled :)

I'm sure many of you have seen Sarah's beautiful scarves, cowls and capelets here on my blog and on Etsy, but I'm excited to also debut a new Fray product with this feature today (and even more excited to snatch one up for myself)! She calls it the Everyday Tote Bag, which sounds like a darn good name to me. You can see some photos of it below and also ENTER TO WIN one for yourself (or one of her Sweetly Simple Capelets)! Read on!

NEW Everyday Tote Bag

Where are you from originally and currently live?

I was born in and currently reside in Royal Oak Michigan, about 20 minutes north of Detroit. I moved back with my husband and now live just 5 blocks down the same street I grew up on. It's weird to live in a house I used to ride my bike past when I was a kid!

How long have you been selling on Etsy?
I've been selling on Etsy for just over one crazy year. I stumbled upon the site and instantly felt at home!

Do you sell on Etsy full time or do you have a day job?
I was one of many casualties of our struggling economy almost a year ago. As fate would have it, it was right around the time that sales in my shop went nuts. I like to think it was the universe's way of pushing me to do what I'd always wanted to do — be my own boss! So with a 'thumbs up' from my super-supportive hubby, I made Etsy my full-time gig.

What, if any, formal art training have you had?
I have a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College for Creative Studies right here in Detroit. I studied a little bit of everything while I was there: painting, sculpture, printmaking, glasswork, welding, ceramics, fibers...but sadly, no photography. I spent a lot of my time in the foundry working with bronze and steel, and playing in the woodshop. Sadly, I don't recall much of the art history I learned, but I can work an orbital sander like nobody's business!

How did you decide on your shop name?
The name FRAY was born from my married name of 'Freitas'. People were always mispronouncing it, so I would spell it phoenetically for them. As soon as I realized it was a fiber-related word, too, it was a done deal!

Sweetly Simple Capelet

What inspires you?
There's not much that doesn't provoke my attention (which makes focusing on one task a little tough). I seem to be drawn mostly to patterns and textures; tree bark, fences and gates, old picture frames, vintage fabrics...the list goes on and on.

What do you like least about your craft?
I hate weaving in the ends of yarn on finished pieces. It's not usually difficult, but it drives me nuts. I haven't the foggiest idea why!

What's the largest number of pieces you have made in one day?
Hmm, once I made 8 scarves in one day. There was an obscene amount of caffeine running through my veins. I think I still have the shakes!

Do you have any advice for other sellers on Etsy or those thinking about pursuing their craft?
If you don't love it, you may end up hating it. And a steady supply of coffee always helps.

Five Etsy Shops you Love
TheHouseofMouse  Teeny-tiny creatures in even teeny-tinier outfits! Just thinking about it makes me squeal!
lillyella  Lovely jewelry any girl would want to own. The first shop to drain my PayPal account.
GetReadySetGo  Super-cool luggage that makes me want to hop on a plane to anywhere. The second shop to drain my PayPal account.
yummypancake  This girl can crochet ANYTHING! No, really...I think she crocheted an entire sewing machine once. Silly genius.
PoppyFlowerFibers  She feeds my new yarn-spinning obsession. Soft, beautiful hand dyed fibers that I drool over. The third shop to drain my PayPal account.

Summer Net Scarf

What is your favorite leisure time activity?
Dying and spinning yarn take up any extra time I have. Does it count as leisure time when I use the yarn I spin to make things for the shop?

What is the strangest thing that has ever happened to you?
I once dreamed that someone was chasing me down a big metal hallway. I went through a doorway and fell into a pit of ice. Then I woke up suddenly and found that I'd been sleepwalking and was standing in the kitchen with the freezer door wide open. That was pretty weird.

If you could trade places with any other person for a week with whom would it be?
I'd really like to trade places with someone who lives to workout. I'd really like to know what that feels like. :)

If you were a superhero, what would your superpowers to be?
I'd like to say that I'd want the power to create peace on Earth or to house the homeless. But what I'd really want is to be able to make cold birthday cake appear on command.

Leafy Scarf

What makes you angry?
People who walk up the escalator and get mad when I don't move out of their way irritate me. If this is you, next time please take the stairs... save yourself some frustration.

What would you like to learn to do?
I really need to learn to cook chicken properly. I'm terrified to undercook it and make someone sick, so it usually ends up less than palatable.

On a scale of 1 to 10 how happy are you?
Most days, I'd say about an 8. That number plummets on days I don't get to spin, dye, or crochet. :) Really, I'm fairly happy because I get the chance to do what I really want to do for a living.

What does the future hold for fray?
The current plan is to slowly move toward using mostly yarns that I dye and spin. It's a big task, but I'm having such a hard time finding fibers I like, so why not just make it all?!? Haha, who knows what will really happen. I think I like it that way. :)

I {heart} fray! My female friends, family members and myself are proud owners & wearers of Sarah's gorgeous work :)

Let's see: bags that I carry most? I like a small handbag/large clutch: just enough for my compact camera, small wallet/coin purse and iPhone!

Don't you think every Shy Siren should have one of these?? ;)

Woo hoo! First entry (maybe)! I just adore Fray and adore Sarah, too! What a delightful interview - love the sleepwalking story. :)

I am a fiend for tote type bags - I fill them up quickly. It's nearly impossible to choose one favorite piece from Sarah's shop of lovelies, but ... it's going to be a toss up between a stranded cowl (LOVE) or a sketchy scarf (also LOVE).

This is the Spotlight I've been waiting for! Her work is awesome and I've never seen anything like it. Beautiful, beautiful work!

My staple is a medium size purse/handbag. I prefer the over the shoulder, short strap style so it fits right under my arm. I like it because it holds all of my stuff and it's secure under my arm when I'm out and about.

I love the Leafy Scarf in Strawberry. So pretty!

Thanks,

I just adore Sarah's shop---it's like a breathe of fresh air, it has such a lovely relaxing look to it.It's incredibly hard to pick a favorite as I love all the cool blues and greens, but if I must I'll go with the Thick'n sketchy scarf olive.

As far as bags I can't live without, there are several. I always need at least one little formal clutch with style, and then I need a bag that I can just fill up with stuff, swing over my shoulder and forget it's there.

I have a messenger bag that I take everywhere--I'm a bit of a traveling packrat, so I like my bag to be able to hold books, papers, sewing, a water bottle, mints, assorted pens, dental floss...you get the idea.

I really don't think I can just pick one favorite from Sarah's shop. The new bag is gorgeous, as is the capelet! I also really love the blooming vine scarf in sweet corn :) So airy and lovely!

Wow, Sarah's interview had me cracking up. What a funny lady! And her stuff is gorgeous, that Everyday Tote is beautiful, and I better win, because I can't afford one right now! :-) I also love her blooming vine scarf.

As for favorite handbag...I recently carried a structured rectangle type purse but in GREEN. I hate when people don't venture beyond black and brown. Especially in a serious structured purse, you need a bright bold color. Anyway, carried it until it wore out (unlike me, so I must have LOVED it) and now I have a blueberry BLUE slouchy bag w/ white stitching and awesome buckles and pockets. It reminds me of Balenciaga's 'Motorcycle' bag. I'm also using this one until it dies.

I infinitely prefer purses that close with a zipper. With small kids, I'm always bending over to grab them, or something, and things tend to fall out.

Wow, can you tell I love purses?

Gosh, there's a heckuva lotta gorgeous stuff in Sarah's shop! I'd have to say... the Everyday Tote in green — I love that it kinda looks like a vest. Though I love the Blooming vine Scarf in Earthy too — gorgeous colours! Oh wait, and I love the Leafy Scarf in Strawberry too. ACK, beautiful stuff abound!

Great feature, and thanks for the giveaway :)

I have to carry a big bag! I usually lug around a few books and all other necessities at any given time. I love hobo bags, and even more if I can put the strap across my chest. (My stuff is heavy!)

I think the Sketchy Scarf in Beige Velvet is my favorite item in Sarah's shop. tough to choose one thing though.

hooray for fray! she's a lovely girl with a lovely shop.

gee, bags. they're my weakness, and i have a lot of them, but i mostly tend toward totes. i rarely go anywhere without a battalion of stuff that includes at least one book, a newspaper, something to drink and my latest package of beads (so i can contemplate new designs while i'm commuting).

as for my favorite in sarah's shop, it's definitely the summer net scarves - delicate and versatile and visually stunning!

I almost always carry a Vera bradley bag. I have them in several prints and matching accessories for them all too. I used to be addicted to her Hipster bag, then for awhile i was loving her Tote. Right now it's a backsack in the Peacock pattern. I like how it keeps my hands free - easier to dig for goodies at the rummage sales i love to go to in the summer!

My favorite fray item" that green everyday tote is sa-weet and I also love the Blooming Vine Scarf in Blue Mist.

Well, I really like bags like the Everyday Tote...but the bags I find most useful are....laptop bags. I have several second-hand lappy bags. Only one laptop. I'm an artist, see, and they're the PERFECT size for a sketchbook, a pencil binder, a set of paints...they usually have all kinds of office supply-friendly extras, which of course also work for art supplies...

and they're dull. I swear, I'm'a paintin' one of them up as soon as I think of a good design. So dull!

Fantastic prizes, by the way-- I seriously love that capelet!

Thick 'n Sketchy Scarf in Deep Olive
I figure if I wore this I would look like a big ol flower on a vine.

I love big shoulder bags/shoulder totes. I hate putting my purse down when I am out so I never carry one I can't sling over my shoulder. I have to carry all my stuff plus my husbands because he has a sciatic nerve thing that hurts when he sits on his wallet. Plus he has to have candy, and string and a small flashlight and must save all receipts so it all adds up. He may be joshing me about the whole wallet thing, he seems to think I am not only his wife but his assistant/secretary. I need a raise....

Really love Sarah's work. Live in Australia and have purchased some of her scarves, great comments from friends, envious of her ability to create some many delightful designs. Love her Summer net scarf in blue slate and yellow. Think her tote is great, however would not be useful for me everyday and I would put too much in it and would never find anything, I need a smaller handbag.
Would be great to go shopping with and carry my purchases.

Wow, Sarah is such an extremely creative and talented artist and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this fantastic interview with her!

I love to create unusual, feminine, unique looks for myself and love to use accessories like scarves and handbags to give my looks those finishing touches that are going to make me stand out in a crowd! For me, handbags are just as important fashion item as the clothes I am wearing so I am very selective about what kind, style and design of bag I carry. I truly would be proud to carry any one of Sarah's gorgeous bags and I know they will catch the attention of those around me.

I usually like to carry large bags because I have 3 young children and so I am always carting around much of their gear with me. But, that doesn't mean I have to give up chic style, glamour, and charisma because of it! I have found some stunning bags that will make me look very-un-mother-like and more like a fashion "icon" if I choose the right bags.

I carry tote style bags the most because they can fit the most into them easily! And, although it was very hard to pick a favorite one from Sarah's Shop, The Fray in the drapey linen fabric in a classic natural color on the outside, and lined in a medium brown cotton blend with a dusty lavender, mini floral print on the inside. I just love the organic look of this bag, and it has compartments inside that can keep me organized. This "style" fits perfectly into the looks that I strive to achieve.

Thank you so much for the chance to enter.

I always carry around some sort of a tote. But with babywearing, it's hard to have a perfect one: they either too heavy, or straps too short, or too small, etc.
Loved this one as it seems perfect: flexible, light and decent size. Hope I win one to be able to try it out.
