Spotlight: Crafterall

Wall Topo in Olive No. 4

Marnie has enjoyed working with her hands since she was just a squirt. Her "crafting area" grew from a decorated cardboard box to her own craft room. Now she has two squirts of her own, a corner of the basement overflowing with crafty supplies, and a patient hubby who lets her make things.

Marnie's heart lies with "all things crafty" - which inspired her shop name, Crafterall. Her goal is to create items that appeal to a diverse group of people who share one common trait: the appreciation of handmade works. Read on to learn more about her inspiration, her secret fetishes and how she likes her cider.

Wall Topo in Olive No. 4

Where do you hail from and currently reside?
I'm originally from Bemidji, a small city located on the frozen arctic tundra of north-central Minnesota. I went to college there, met my husband, moved to and lived in beautiful Madison, Wisconsin for almost 9 years, welcomed two beautiful daughters into the world and then recently moved to the Minneapolis area to be closer to our families. We currently live in the sleepy city of Shorewood, on the south end of majestic Lake Minnetonka.

How long have you been selling on Etsy?
I opened my shop just over a year ago in November 2007.

Do you sell on Etsy full time or do you have a day job?
I began selling on Etsy during my maternity leave after the birth of our second daughter. Before that I was teaching high school English and coaching the school's forensics team. Since then, I've been at home with the girls, but I have plans to return to the work force this fall, if only part-time.

Retro Poppies - original paper cut

Five Favorite Etsy Shops
This is such a hard question.
3dots  for her stunning and simple jewelry pieces, as well as her style of photographing them.
jenniferzalewski for her gorgeous greyhound linocut prints. I see my own greyhound, Jack, in so many of her pieces.
btaylorquilts for her quilting eye candy. I dream of having an ounce of her skills.
savor for making some of the most edible-looking soap on Etsy.
Mixed Species for their tireless sense of humor and creativity.

What inspires you?
Creativity in all forms, and especially when it involves creating something complicated or unusual out of everyday materials. There's magic there. I think that's part of the reason I'm drawn to papercuts and working with paper in general. It's such an ordinary material, but can be and has been used to create some of the most amazing pieces of art.

Share a secret obsession (or two).
It's no secret that I love paper, but I rarely admit to people that my love of paper borders fetishism. I really like to run my hands over the covers and pages of a new book, crack the binding, smell the sepia pages, shuffle playing cards just for the texture, fold origami shapes, and wrap gifts to enjoy the architecture of paper. I hold on to way too much paper (my other obsession - pack rat-ism), and tend to think "I could use this for something someday".

Topo Pillow Cover in Blue

What is the stupidest thing you have ever done?
I was fifteen, playing with friends in the shallow end of the swimming pool before a high school swim meet. We were showing off our backwards sommersaults and seeing who could turn the fastest. In my attempt, I somehow managed to scrape my front teeth on the tiled floor of the pool, shaving a quarter inch off one of my teeth. Worst. Sound. Ever. I had to survive the rest of the meet and an entire day of school before my appointment with the dentist. To this day, I have no idea of the physics of such a move and the event will live in infamy in my hall of shame.

What makes you angry?
Injustices on any scale, when people who smoke while their kids are in the car (and when they consequently flick their cigarettes out the window), and when people abuse animals.

Pearls Oven Digital Photo Prints

What would I find in your refrigerator right now?
Not enough! We had to be creative in order to make dinner tonight. As it is, there is some Izze sodas, two pounds of butter, lemon juice, Greek yogurt, red grapes, green peppers, oranges, cheese sticks, flour tortillas, baby carrots, milk, whole milk for the babe, 3 kinds of salad dressing, pickles, jelly no one likes, hummus, cottage cheese, eggs, salsa, and some of my husband's fancy Belgian beers. My hard cider is NOT in the fridge. The British and I prefer it room temp.

What do you have planned for Crafterall in the future?
I would love for Crafterall to be busy and big enough so that I could continue to stay at home. Even with what little business I've had (relative to legitimate LLCs and small businesses), I have felt so empowered and energized to create new items, sell them, interact with the buyers, collaborate with other sellers, and everything else that comes with the job. It's not easy, but it's extremely gratifying.

Topo in Aqua - Set of 4 Art Cards

Now it's time for a Giveaway!
Marnie is offering one lucky winner their choice of any item in her shop priced $15 or under. I don't know about you, but there is an empty spot on my studio wall just calling for Retro Poppies or the brown topo cards framed in a series.

Here's how to enter:
Please visit Marnie's shop and leave one comment on this post saying what your favorite piece from her shop is. You may enter a second time by leaving a new comment telling us what you would like to see more of from Crafterall and what your favorite color is. You MUST include your Etsy username or email address with each post or you will not be included. You have until Friday, January 30 at 8am (est) to enter. The winner will be chosen by random and announced that afternoon.

Marnie is also offering free shipping on orders in her shop through the end of February when you mention this blog post at checkout. Just make a note in the message to seller box and wait for a revised invoice before paying.

I hope you enjoy Marnie's work and good luck!

Wedding Finds: Cake Stands

We picked up a few more things for the wedding from our favorite antique store and it's starting to come together... I think. Since most standard wedding traditions arent really my piece of cake (yep, pun intended), I didn't want to have one big wedding cake but several small cakes in different flavors and styles. And the best part about that - cake stands!

We have a couple from friends and family but picked up these six this weekend. I haven't done all the math yet but think I will need about 7-9 cakes for 70 - 100 people.

I think my favorite is this ruffly white one. Maybe "our" little cake will go on it.

I really love this as well - It's actually a plate and a milk glass sundae dish that we will transform into a cake stand. There are so many cool pieces you can find to use for this idea. It's really easy and will often save you money and allow for greater customization.
I plan to post a little tutorial on how we put it together later.

Also picked up a few more jars. I really love the small ones with the wire closures, I think they will look great with a bit of chunky lace wrapped around and candles inside.

Once we pull our collection of old bottles out of storage (the keypad has been frozen!), I can take inventory and start to organize what pieces to use on each table. That could be hard to keep track of - I think I see little labels and a diagram in my future!

Paper n Stitch

It's time for me to ask a favor of you! It's easy, I promise :)

Some of you may have heard of Paper n Stitch, but for those
who have not, it's a fabulous exhibition space for fine art, handmade and vintage shops. You can browse some awesome finds, leave comments for the artists and link to their shops to buy items you like. The Paper n Stitch blog is also really worth following!

My shop is included in the current exhibition and here is where I need your help! People can "heart" a shop, like you mark a shop as a favorite in Etsy. During each exhibition, the shop with the most hearts wins free space in future exhibitions and other great handmade prizes. I would really appreciate if you would take a minute and heart me!

It's super easy - just click on the green 'Sign Up' button in the top right corner, fill out the info on the screen and you are done - no email confirmations and they won't send you any junk mail! Then go to the main page of Paper n Stitch, click on Lillyella and click the little 'heart-o-meter' at the top next to my photo.

Thanks so much for helping me out - I'd love to beat some kind of heart-o-meter reacord! And if you read my profile while you are there, you'll notice a special offer ;)

New Pieces

I've been working on lots of new designs but have only had time to photograph and list a few so far. Soon I will also be listing some new brass necklaces – vintage lockets and a tiny charm series!

Onyx Keyhole Earrings $13.50

In the Kitchen: Easy Fiesta Breadsticks

Welcome to a new series for 2009 all about the one thing I love more than making jewelry – eating! Well... and cooking, but mostly eating. Every other Tuesday, opposite my featured artists, I will feature a new recipe with how-to photos or fun kitchen related finds. You can easily access these posts anytime with the links under In the Kitchen Series in the right sidebar.

This week, easy Fiesta Breadsticks - they're a yummy appetizer & snack or perfect with any spicy dish.

Prep time: 5 min  |  Cook time: 11 min |  Makes 4 breadsticks

What you'll need:
• 1 package refrigerated crescent rolls
• taco seasoning
• shredded monterey jack cheese

On a small cookie sheet, unroll the crescent roll dough, keeping two wedges together as shown above. You will get 4 breadsticks from a standard package of 8 rolls. You may need to flatten or reshape the sections after unrolling. Also make sure the two wedges are connected well, you don't want any gaps. You can overlap the two wedges a little and press them together along the seam if needed.

Sprinkle with the desired amount of taco seasoning.

Next, add the shredded cheese down the center. I prefer monterey jack but these would be equally delicious with other types of cheeses as well. I like a good amount of cheese but if you use too much they are hard to close and break open when cooking.

Fold each side of the dough up and press the seam closed. Be sure to also press the top and bottom closed or the cheese will leak out. Sprinkle a bit more taco seasoning on top.

Bake at 375° for 11 min. or until the dough begins to brown.

Serve warm and enjoy! These breadsticks have quickly become a favorite in my house. I always serve them with my Santa Fe Chicken, which I will feature next time on February 3. Be sure to stop back!

The January Name Game!

Yep, the Name Game is back! This month's piece is a new pair of earrings composed of capped faceted glass in an awesome shade of pale topaz with little bumble bees dangling below. I will also make these in brass, so be sure your name ideas will work for both.

Here's how we play the game... all are welcome!
These new earrings need a name. Please leave a comment on this post with your name idea(s) and if one of yours is chosen, you win them! They will then be listed for sale in my shop using your winning name. You may enter up to 10 names and they can be entered all at once or at different times.

The word "Earrings" will be added at the end of the winning name so take that into consideration when coming up with ideas. You can include it in your entry if you would like.

YOU MUST INCLUDE your email address or Etsy username with every entry, even if I know you, or it will not be considered.

You have until 10 pm (est) on Thursday, January 29 to enter. I will then choose my five favorite names and post them for a vote Friday morning which will run through the weekend. The winner will be announced on Monday, February 2.

Please email me at nicole@lillyella.com with any questions.
Have fun and good luck!

p.s. I usually don't get so many entries so early in the game - next month I will post the Name Game at noon est to make sure everyone is up and ready to play :)

Resolution # 1

I have made more than one resolution so far for 2009, however, there is only one I have really stuck to whole-heartedly. Probably because it's really fun and easy, as opposed to toning up my rear or getting more sleep...

Resolution #1:
Purchase one item for myself from Etsy each month.

January Resolution Purchase:

Luina Dual Disc Necklace by String of Blue

Julie's shop is one of my favorites. She is also very sweet to work with and I'm happy to support others who are trying to make a go of their craft, like me.
(Update: I just learned that Julie closed her Etsy shop today - just crazy timing! But hopefully we can soon find her on Big Cartel. I will surely keep you posted as her work is worth following!)

So I ask, is it February yet? I can't wait to keep working on this resolution! I will share each of my Resolution Purchases with you
as I go, and maybe some of my *other* resolutions, ya know, the un-fun ones.

I'd love to hear your resolutions, too - do share!

I Said Yes to the Dress

Finally - sheesh! What the heck took me so long? I did decide to go with the tiered Jessica McClintock Rebecca Dress shown above. My dress, however, has a slightly different style lace for the corset, and the lace is beige rather than black. The rest of the dress is ivory. It also came with a pink sash though I think I will change it out for a champagne colored one. I guess the marketing crew at JMC was too lazy to photograph the actual dress I purchased so they did a bad photoshop job (in my opinion!) on the original photo to represent the other dress.

I also found this beautiful bouquet the other day and I think it's just perfect. I had been thinking about using shades of rose, mauves, golds, yellows - and the ivory and black anemones are to die for.

Im thinking about using some single stem peonies, ranuculas and votive candles down the long rectangular tables in our collection of old bottles and mason jars. Maybe some chunky lace or ribbon wrapped around the jars. Simple, eclectic. The tableclothes will be white so I am going to find a nice collection of fabrics to use to make some table runners.

My aunt also gave some darling little bird candleholders that I think will work nicely on either end of the tables. Maybe it's starting to come together! I'll post more photos as these ideas and projects progress. My big challenge now is finding fabric for the table runners. Suggestions are welcome!

I'm Famous! Well, not really...

Nope, that's not me. But isn't she beautiful? Isn't he beautiful? And they are amazingly nice and talented on top of it. BUT, the real reason for my post - check out that jewelry! Yep, I made it.

Some of you may be familiar with Chelsea's Etsy shop, Oh My Deer, where she makes wickedly beautiful headpieces but did you know that her husband, Tec, is a wedding photographer? Check out his work here.

I was honored to work with Chelsea last spring to create the perfect pieces for her perfect wedding. With the genius Jose Villa as their photographer, the wedding photos were to die for and now they grace the cover of the new Southern Weddings Magazine. Additional photos and credits can be found inside the magazine and it is so exciting!

Chelsea is wearing my Blushing Dayflower Earrings in matte antiqued silver and my Ring Around the Roses Bracelet.

In addition to these pieces, I can customize about anything in my shop with different metal finishes, bead or pearl colors, etc. to match your wedding colors and style. Please email me at nicole@lillyella.com to discuss what you are looking for or if you are interested in these pieces.

Thanks Chelsea, Tec and Jose for making my jewelry look so beautiful!
