Style Swap: The All Day Dress

This week’s Style Staple is the Pleated Tube Dress by Lirola. It’s the perfect piece for the busy business woman who loves the night life. It’s stylish and sexy without being too revealing and looks comfortable enough to wear all day. And even though it’s form fitting, the pleats are a nice distraction for those of us who have not yet achieved the perfect six pack…

Check out the full swap on papernstitch to see how to take this dress from a day of meetings to a night of dancing by changing up a few accessories.

Local Love: Erie, PA

This week we visit Erie, PA, an industrial city on the shore of Lake Erie. Named for the lake and the Native American tribe that resided along its southern shore, Erie is the 4th largest city in Pennsylvania with a population of 104,000. It produces the third largest amount of wine in the United States and the region's largest attraction is Presque Isle State Park, drawing in over 4 million visitors per year. Presque Isle Downs, a racetrack and casino, and Splash Lagoon are other popular attractions in the area. Here are just a few of the talented artists who call Erie home.

Got $1 for a Good Cause?

eNVe Designs
is having an awesome jewelry raffle now thru May 15 to help with her fundraising efforts for the American Liver Foundation. You may remembering reading her Spotlight feature here on my blog a few weeks back where I talked about her family's involvement in the ALF Run for Research Team. Her husband recently completed the Boston Marathon but they are still trying to close the gap on their fundraising goal for this year.

A $1 donation will enter you into the drawing for a chance to win one of three $30 eNVe Designs gift certificates. Who doesn't enjoy a little gamble now and then? Even if you don't win, you can feel good about donating to a worthy cause. I know there are so many out there and it's hard when money is tight, but even $1 can go a long way.

You can find all the details about the raffle here on her blog and you can also still shop her Earrings for Charity collection where 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the cause, too. Thanks for your time!

In the Kitchen: Corn Casserole

This week we're cooking up delicious Corn Casserole. It's like cornbread with a twist and is really easy to make. Just a few basic, inexpensive ingredients cook up a big pan that's sure to please. It's a great side dish and perfect for a holiday meal or potluck. The leftovers also store well and can easily be reheated in the microwave or oven. You can even mix it up ahead of time and leave it in the fridge until your ready to bake. You will find a printable recipe card at the end of this post as well as some variations to spice up the dish.

Prep time: 15 min | Cook time: 45 min | Serves: About 8 - 12

What you'll need:
1/2 C (1 stick) margarine, melted
2 eggs
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
8 oz sour cream
15 oz can whole kernel corn, drained*
15 oz can creamed style corn
1 box corn muffin mix (I use Jiffy)

In a medium/large bowl, soften/melt the margarine, add the eggs, salt and pepper. Stir until mostly blended.

Next add the sour cream and both cans of corn. Mix again until blended.

Last, add the corn muffin mix, fold in slowly and mix until blended.

Pour into a greased baking dish of your choice. One batch will fill a 13x9 pan or you can use two round dishes, fluted pie pans, smaller rectangles etc. The baking time is usually the same regardless of what shape pan you use.

Bake at 350° for about 45 minutes. Top will begin to crisp and brown and the underneath will remain softer. Let stand about 10 minutes before serving for inside to set a bit.

*If you would like this dish a little gooier inside, more of a 'corn pudding' with a bready top, do not drain the whole kernel corn. I make it both ways, and both are delicious.

Aside from being easy and super yummy, what I love about this recipe is the versatility. Eat it as a side dish with herb grilled chicken or ham or top it with country gravy (yummmm). It's also a great, hearty vegetarian dish when served with a salad or fruit.

You can easily spice up this recipe or make it a meal in itself by adding ingredients such as cheese (cheddar or swiss work great), cubed ham, bacon, or cut veggies before baking. Just be sure any meat or veggies you add are precooked. Even simply adding additional seasonings such as garlic and onion powder or crushed red pepper will give it a different taste. I'd love to hear about what creative ways you find to change up this recipe or if you enjoy it just the way it is!

April Name Game Vote

Thanks to everyone who entered this month's Name Game! For those who wonder what I look for in a name, I judge it's appropriateness to the design, it's creativity and how different it is from the other names in my shop. I often get stuck for ideas (hence this contest) and end up with similar names for everything so I love getting suggestions that I would never think of, that are different than my existing names but yet don't stick out like a sore thumb amongst the others. This month I once again had over 180 awesome entries and successfully tackled the grueling job of narrowing it down to five (It's really hard!).

Please vote for your favorite from the choices below. You may only vote one time but you can ask others to stop by and vote, too!
The voting will be open until Monday morning at 9 am and the
results will be kept secret until I announce the winner that afternoon. The necklaces will then be listed for sale in my shop.

Here are some of my other favorite entries:
Wings of Spring
Spread Your Wings
Skyward Bound
Spring Fling
Flying Free
Wings on the Wind
Harmony
Dart ‘n Flutter
Devoted
Natures Journey
Into The Wind
Earth, Wind and Wing
Whispering Wings
Gliding on a Breeze
Winged Dancers

Thanks again to everyone who entered and for stopping back to vote! The next Name Game begins May 18.

If you missed any of my previous Spotlight interviews, they are worth checking out and you can find them all here. The next Spotlight begins on May 4 and then I will have a new artist feature and giveaway every week!

Local Love: San Diego, CA

This week we visit San Diego, the 2nd largest city in California and the 8th largest in the US with a population of over 3 million. Tourism is a major industry given the city's climate with such attractions as the San Diego Zoo, Seaworld and Legoland (I am totally going there one day). The film Fast Times at Ridgemont High was adapted from a book written by Cameron Crowe after he spent a year doing research undercover at Clairemont High in San Diego. Home to such names as Annette Bening, Wyatt Earp, Eddie Veder and Tony Hawk, the talented Etsy artists shown below also call San Diego home.

Crafting: Tissue Paper Pom-Pom Flowers

Welcome to the first in a new, highly-requested, How-To series! I'm still trying to think of some snappy little title, so that may change one day. Every other Tuesday I'll be bringing you a new project and will cover a broad range of crafts and levels of difficulty.

This week we're making simple tissue paper pom-pom flowers. I'm highly addicted to making paper flowers of all kinds and will share a variety of others with you in the future but I thought this quick and easy project was a great starter!

What you'll need for one 5" flower:
4 pieces of tissue paper, 10" x 5"
18" piece of thin wire, floral or any other type
Scissors

Stack the four sheets of tissue on top of each other. Make 3/8" accordion folds, creasing after each fold. I find it easiest to make one fold, flip it over, make the other, and repeat, so you are always folding up away from you and it's easy to see.

Fold the 18" piece of wire in half and slip over the center of the folded tissue. Twist the bottom closed. Using sharp scissors, trim the ends of the paper into rounded or pointy shapes. I chose rounded for this one.

Separate the four tissues layers, one at a time until the flower begins to take shape. Depending on what you will use them for, you can keep the bottom flat or you can puff them into a ball for hanging.

You can use these little flowers just about anywhere! I love using them as napkin rings for a summer picnic or when we have guests over. You can use them to decorate a basket or the back of a chair, make a bouquet for a vase or they are beautiful as a bow on a gift.

Try layering different colors of tissue for a beautiful effect or embellishing the centers with buttons or beads. You can also easily make other sizes by starting with different sized tissue. In the future I will show you how to make really big ones to hang from the ceiling. I hope you have fun making these pretty little flowers. I'd love to hear about what uses you find for them!

I'll have a PDF instruction sheet that you can download or print
available later today.

Spotlight: rikrak

I'm thrilled to start the week off with a new Spotlight that is sure to make you smile. Kristal of rikrak is just brimming with happiness and positive energy which shines through in everything she does. A former elementary school teacher (in various locales including Ontario, Thailand and South Korea), Kristal has always loved crafting and bright colors. She repurposes vintage fabrics into beautiful, new fun and playful creations for all ages.

Read on to learn more about her work, her magic kindness-elixir, her favorite lullaby and enter to win one of her sustainable quilty wallets!

Recycled quilty vintage fabric clutch $21

Where are you from - originally and currently live?
Thanks so much for having me, lillyella! I grew up in a mid-sized city in southern Ontario, Canada. These days, my little family & I live in lovely lovely, pedestrian-friendly, naturally wonderful Ottawa, Canada.

How long have you been selling on Etsy?
I started selling on Etsy exactly 2 years ago last week! What a fun 2 years it’s been!

Do you sell on Etsy full time or do you have a day job?
Yes to both! In the mornings, I get to be at home mommying with my little sweetie! In the afternoons, when he’s in kindergarten, I rikrak. At night, as soon as he’s asleep, it’s more fun rikraking!

Five Favorite Etsy Shops
oh heavens … so many. Today I especially adore:
kinchi for her gorgeous use of vibrant vintage fabrics for modern kiddies.
chakrapennywhistle what a fabulous & truly kind eco-forward artist she is!
artmind those brilliant 99 feelings sculptures – love ‘em
tortilla girl love those beautiful new tunics
cookoorikoo what beautiful new rings she makes from vintage findings!
(and I’ve gotta say… I adore letterpress stationary: so anything beautifully letterpressed!)

Vintage little quilt fabric bib $21

What inspires you?
So many wonderful things: kindness, joy, natural light, pattern, geometric shapes, simple lines & colour-play, my curious & fun little sweetie, my creative & loving family.

What do you like least about your craft?
It’s sad that all of the vintage fabrics i use are in limited edition. eek! I just adore so many of them… they can be hard to part with when i know they can’t likely ever be found again!

Do you have any advice for other sellers on Etsy or those thinking about pursuing their craft?
Believe in yourself. You can do it!

Vintage fabric patches $4.50

Where is the coolest place you have ever been?
My cute hubby & I lived & worked in Thailand for a year a few years back. Our various amazing travels around that beautiful, vivid, friendly country were so inspiring. Some of the most amazing places I've been to I saw during that time.

What is your favorite leisure time activity?
Playing & visiting & laughing with my wonderful family!

If you could trade places with any other person for a week, with whom would it be?
Just for one week, I’d love to be a fulltime portrait photographer like the famous Annie Leibovitz. When I was very little, she was the first artist I ever aspired to be. Today, decades later, I still love her crisp, emotive work, thoughtful!

Vintage recycled fabric quilt coasters $7

What is your favorite song?
Oh I’m so crazily obsessed with different songs on eternal repeat at various times. So today, my 3 faves (sorry – can’t choose 1) would be:
Elevator Love Letter by Stars
Tennessee Waltz by Patti Page, as my little sweetie & I love to sing it as a lullaby (I know – funny lullaby!) each night.
The Wind by Cat Stevens

If you could be a superhero, what would your powers be?
Oh wonderful! If I could be a superhero, I’d love to possess the superpower potion of *kindness-elixir* whereby with just one drop I could magically turn wars into conversations, and human rights would always supercede violence toward others. Gotta mix some of that up!

What does the future hold for rikrak?
Hopefully lots and lots of continued great things: great adventures with my lovely family. on the work front: many new designs, finishing the structuring of a fun new pattern book I’m working on, continuing to grow my new little blog, and lots more! Please stay tuned!

And speaking of staying tuned, you can follow rikrak on her blog (which is chock full amazing things daily!), on twitter and in her shop.
