Crafting: Tutorials, Patterns and Kits on Etsy

Some of you may know that I recently busted up my right paw, not so good for someone who works with their hands. But luckily, I have full use of my fingers and some mobility through the rest of my hand and though it is painful, I can still work, just slower than usual. With that being said, instead of sharing of my own craft project today, I thought it was a good time to share some from other Etsy sellers.

In addition to the wonderful handmade and vintage items you can find on Esty, there are also numerous DIY craft kits, tutorials and patterns available. Some give you everything you need while some just tell you how to do it, but regardless of your skill level or interests, there is a little something for everyone from sewing to candles to cheese! Here are just a few kits, tutorials and patterns you can find on Etsy and some links at the bottom to continue your search for more:

Couch Potato Eye Pillow Kit from scarletfig $15

Paper Flower Kit from paperplatypus $18

Mozzarella and Ricotta Cheese Kit from UrbanCheesecraft $21

Adorned Swing Top Kit from littlefishbigpond $14

Make your own Flower Brooch Kit from paperandstring $14

Glass Pendant Kit from CandyTiles2 $22.50

Crocheted Hedgehog Kit from AmyGaines $12

Soy Candle Kit from MyDelightfulScents $18

Papercut Project PDF from FogAndThistle $4

Baby Bumblebee PDF Pattern from bitofwhimsyprims $6

Make your own Coasters Tutorial from littlecoastergnome $10

Retro Vehicles Knitting Patterns from LeahSutton $7.60

You can many more kits and patterns on Etsy by searching DIY kit, pattern, or tutorial. You can also add a word to your search to narrow it down, such as jewelry, sewing, handbag, etc. Happy crafting!

Spotlight: m chen wears

Her name is Emily Chen and she likes to draw. After a 10-year hiatus from her university printmaking days, she began silkscreening her illustrations onto shirts and totes as a side business, and after a few open houses in her apartment, a couple outdoor festivals and some encouragement, she's kept at it. Most recently she has added paper products into the mix, such as greeting cards, featuring her awesome illustrations.

A love of prosciutto, family feud and sleeping in and a hate for peanut butter, tube tops and jogging are only a few things that make this talented artist who she is. Read on to learn more about her inspiration, her favorite music and what the future holds for m chen wears. You can also enter to win the piece of your choice from her shop!

Where are you from - originally and currently live?
Born and raised in Ottawa, Canada. If you mean originally as in origins, I’m Taiwanese ;)

How long have you been selling on Etsy?
Since September 2008.

Do you sell on Etsy full time or do you have a day job?
This is very much a side act — I keep overly busy with a day job already, running my own business as a freelance graphic designer/illustrator. I work on the t-shirts in fits and starts, whenever I have the stamina and/or the motivation, or an upcoming craft show!

What, if any, formal art training have you had?
I graduated with a Bachelor in Fine Art from Queen’s University (Kingston, Ontario) in 1998. I specialized in Printmaking — lithography, etching, woodcut... and especially silkscreening.

Brainstorming sketches for the "re[VERB]" line

What made you decide to open up shop on Etsy?
Though I love my day job, I’ve been trying to grow the illustration part of things in the past couple of years. I decided the only way to do more illustration... was to do more illustration. So I bit the bullet and did a line of t-shirts and totes. After a couple events, I figured Etsy would be a terrific way to reach beyond city limits. (AND I may have gotten a little encouragement & guidance from the lovely Loopy4ewe ;)

What inspires you?
I’m a bit of a tangential thinker. I love words and concepts. My first line of tees revolved around lines from children’s verses (“See how they run” and “Five, six, pick up sticks”). The current line, which is still only half done, is called “re[VERB]”, each design uses a word that begins with “re” then a verb. I was in the Scrabble Club in University, can you tell?

What do you like least about your craft?
Hands down, my least favourite part of printing my wears is getting the actual artwork to the screen. It involves putting light-sensitive emulsion on the screen and exposing the screen — it’s a long, finicky, multi-step process. I can’t tell you how many failed screens I had in '07 and '08. I finally got smart this year and outsourced this step, huge sigh of relief!

Do you have any advice for other sellers on Etsy or those thinking about pursuing their craft?
I’m not sure I’m equipped to give advice yet, since i’m a relative newbie... but two most important things that come to mind are:
Go get traffic — with 200,000+ shops on Etsy, it’s tough to get noticed! Drive traffic to your shop by participating in the forum threads, joining a team, blogging...
Look good — presentation is key. A clear, attractive, pertinent banner is important, and good photos are paramount.

Five Etsy shops you love
Only five??? These (and many others) make me drool:
The Tiny Fig
Wooly Baby
Firefluff
Yokoo
Get Ready, Set, GO!

Where is the coolest place you have ever been?
Toss-up between Giant’s Causeway (Northern Ireland) and Toroko Gorge (Taiwan).

What is your favorite leisure time activity?
Sports... ultimate frisbee and ice hockey these days.

Share some of your favorite music
Gomez, Joel Plaskett, Neko Case, Damien Rice, Great Lake Swimmers, The Shins, Chad VanGaalen, Tori Amos... and so many more!

What makes you angry?
When people don’t take the time to understand the big picture or to consider how their actions affect others.

What would you like to learn to do?
Be a better listener. And play guitar!

On a scale of 1 to 10 how happy are you?
10 — the happiest I’ve ever been. That doesn’t mean I don’t see areas to improve!! Hopefully the next time you ask, I’ll be an 11 ;)

What does the future hold for you and your shop?
I hope to finish up the re[VERB] line by fall — four designs done so far, four more to go. Maybe one day, I’ll pull out my sewing machine and serger, and also print on handmade garments... you know, in my spare time, ha!

It was another great month for the Name Game with over 250 awesome entries! Thanks to all who stopped by to submit their ideas, there wasn't a bad one in the bunch. The voting will be open until Monday morning at 9 am and the results will be kept secret until I announce the winner that afternoon. The necklace will then be listed for sale in my shop.

Ocean Floor
Tidewater
Industrial Ocean
Tint of Mint
Sugarmint
Mojito
Alice in Chains
Sea Candy

Thanks again to all who entered and for stopping back to vote. The next Name Game begins on July 17!

Fresh Faces: Chronology

Today's Fresh Face is a bit near and dear, so I am extra pleased to share it with you. Kathleen of Chronology and I worked together in my "previous life" as a graphic designer and continued to stay in touch as I pursued this new adventure of mine. I'm still not sure, however, if she actually likes my company or if she's just in it for the earrings :)

Regardless, I was happy to introduce her to Etsy and even happier when she asked for help in opening her own shop. I asked Kathleen a few questions on how Chronology came to fruition and how it's going so far.

What made you decide to open chronology?
After first learning about Etsy from you, I was a big fan. It is such a tremendous concept and site! I then purchased some Bakelite (vintage plastic) jewelry from PetitOiseau and then purchased a Bakelite disk from the same shop. The thought was to add a "ring" to it so I could wear it like a pin with scarves. When I received it, though, I was completely intrigued. I loved the material — the color, the texture, the weight. From then I began to think of what else I could do with those disks and, alas, the idea for our clocks was born.

What did you need to do to prepare for opening your shop?
It took some time to get up and running and we are still in the process of increasing stock. After we had a concept for the clocks, we had to consider all of our options for the materials we would be using in addition to the Bakelite; then we began prototyping. We ordered materials, we searched for Bakelite, we selected clock components.
We also purchased our banner, avatar and business cards from Studio71design. Surprisingly, coming up with an idea for packaging was no easy task as 15-16" in diameter and just a about 1 1/2" inches deep is a fairly odd size. Enter our local pizza shop where I was able to purchase some boxes which we use for the inside package. I then shot photo after photo after photo to come up with images I thought would be appealing and got a handful of clocks listed. We were so happy when we sold that first clock —Cherry Bomb — and still get excited when one is purchased.

Do you have a 'day job'?
Yes, I am a sales rep for an offset printing company, a pretty enjoyable gig. I get to meet and work with lots of creative and talented folks!

Since your shop is a team effort between you and your husband, what role do each of you play?
The clocks were my idea, but we wouldn't have the finished pieces without Mike's talent in "engineering" the prototype. He does a lot of the work with the power tools, but I do try to help (I am kind of invading his work space in the man cave, though!). I do much of the assembly, photography, listing, and marketing. Working on Chronology together has been a lot of fun. Too often we get wrapped up in our own hobbies/activities so it's nice that we can enjoy creating these together.

What has been the hardest part about running an Etsy shop?
I think the hardest part is pricing. In our case, the Bakelite is highly collectible and can be expensive so that directly affects the price point of each clock. I also feel like there's never enough time to do everything, but that's o.k. Before Chronology, a lot of my evenings were spent watching Law & Order reruns (yep, I know most of the episodes by heart!) so this is a much more rewarding and somewhat therapeutic way to spend the evening after a day at work.

Whats next for Chronology?
Get many more pieces listed; add additional designs, although, the variation in the Bakelite pieces really means that no two clocks are exactly the same; and maybe work with a less expensive material for the adornments. I'm not sure anything can top the beauty and uniqueness of the Bakelite, though!

Best of luck moving forward, Kathleen! I know I can't wait to see how your designs progress in the future. Visit Chronology.
