With wedding planning season in full effect, I thought it was the perfect time to share today's Spotlight artist with you, Jill of ThreadRare! She's fairly new to the Etsy scene and I'm sure you will fall in love with her gorgeous work just as quickly as I did. Her romantic accessories are created by hand with luxury fabrics and sweet, vintage accents and are perfect for weddings, formal events or everyday glamour!
Read on to learn more about how she got started, what she's learned in her six months on Etsy and what guilty pleasures she partakes in. You can also enter to win a beautiful silk lily clip!
I'm a Midwestern girl - Born in Minnesota, raised in South Dakota, and a resident of Nebraska for the last 10 years.
How long have you been selling on Etsy?
I began selling in November of 2009.
Do you sell on Etsy full time or do you have a day job?
I wouldn't call it a "full time" job, as I spend most of my time with my 19 month old son, but I work on my shop as much as I can in my free time. It's the only job I work on outside of the "stay at home mom" thing.
What, if any, formal training have you had in your craft?
I have a bachelor's degree in Textile and Apparel Design from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln (UNL). Beyond that, my experience in fashion and design includes an internship in Brooklyn, NY with a (now defunct) indie label, 2.5 years of managing a vintage costume collection for a university, and a business I owned for a couple years designing and sewing custom formal and wedding dresses.

What made you decide to open up shop on Etsy?
I decided to open a shop on Etsy because I was drawn to the idea of an online handmade marketplace. I'd never seen anything like it before, and after making a couple purchases I was hooked! I wanted to be a part of it and felt I had something to offer that fit the spirit of a handmade community. Plus, it gives me an excuse to accumulate a whole rainbow of silks!
Where did your shop name come from?
I enjoy a good play on words and I wanted to communicate a sense of uniqueness without actually using the word "unique" (I kind of hate that word). I literally looked up the word "unique" in a thesaurus and came up with "rare." I then brainstormed sewing/design/textile terms, came up with "threadbare," changed "bare" to "rare" and ThreadRare was born!
What inspires you?
I love love love antiques and vintage pieces, I've even considered going back to school to get a masters degree to become a curator for a textile museum (the Costume Institute in NYC would be a dream!). My parents have always collected antiques, so maybe it's genetic. I can find something to love in almost any era, so my style can be a little eclectic that way. I'm also drawn to very sculptural, architectural design, which I think comes through in my work. I'm not really a frilly person so I design for women who appreciate clean lines and simplicity.

What do you like least about your craft?
Since each piece I make takes quite a bit of time, it drives me crazy when something doesn't turn out. My tool is a sewing machine and sometimes it can be difficult to control. That and the fact that everything in sewing takes so much more time than you think it will!
Do you have any advice for other sellers on Etsy or those thinking about pursuing their craft?
I could write a book about what I have learned, and I've only been at it six months! My advice would be don't be afraid to put yourself out there and give it a shot, and don't be afraid to evolve. Your favorite thing may not be the big seller, and maybe it won't sell at all! If you truly want to have a business, you need to create for yourself AND your customer. That, and do your research! I read so many Etsy articles, blog posts, forum threads, etc. on selling advice and how-tos before I listed anything. I knew my photos had to be good, I needed content in my shop, and learned the power of social networking long before I ever had a sale! I felt a little more prepared and had a bit of a support system in place, which helped me survive as a newbie seller.
Favorite item you have bought from Etsy
I bought this Dachschund Wall Clock for my husband as a Father's Day gift (from our son) last year. It hangs in our dining room. I'm really not sure why everyone doesn't have one.

Five things you love
my boys (husband, son, and our dogs)
cupcakes (baking, decorating, eating)
vintage jewelry
blizzards (the storms, although ice cream is good, too)
New York City
Five things you don't
cooking
trashy reality shows
ignorance
waiting
broccoli
What is your favorite leisure time activity?
Reading and watching movies. I love to go to the movies in the theater!
Share some of your guilty pleasures
The Twilight Series (the books), ghost story TV shows, Sex and the City
Share some of your favorite music
If you're looking for something modern or different, you're asking the wrong person. I like Dave Matthews Band, Taylor Swift, some Lady Gaga... I have a pretty pedestrian taste in music.
What makes you angry?
People who think they have the right to be hateful because of their beliefs (religious or otherwise).
What would you like to learn to do?
So many things! Speak new languages, learn new musical instruments, learn how to cook really well...
What does the future hold for you and your shop?
I actually have some big changes in store for my shop. Fingers crossed that all goes well, but I'm hoping to introduce a line of short, modern wedding dresses to the shop, and possible some bridesmaid dresses as well. All custom and made to order, and in fabrics like cotton sateen and silk cotton blends. Sort of an off-beat look. And accessories to match, of course.

If I had to choose just one favorite it would be TIDEPOOL, the small aqua magnolia headband.
The most interesting wedding color palette..hmmm. Well, I think my favorite of all time is the color palette for my mom's upcoming wedding: our dresses are persimmon orange & sunshine yellow.
I'm now following your fantastic blog & following you on Twitter.
I'm already a blog, Facebook & Twitter follower of Jill...borderline cyber-stalking:D
I love the lily clips and hairpins. The design is perfect and the littel flash of rhinestone in the middle makes the piece.
I was maid of honor in my friend's wedding where the colors were white and spring green. It turned out beautifully with her white rose bouquets and the centerpieces. And the bridesmaids all looked good in green! :)
I'm Jennifer from thehatshop.etsy.com and I also follow ThreadRare on twitter. :)
The headband is beautiful! I just love her shop.
Threadrare has absolutely gorgeous products. Love them! But, I have to say that I LOVE the Lily Flower Statement Headband in Ruby Red. Gorgeous!
Fave wedding colors were mine Red, Black, and white. Not unique but very traditional and elegant.

What a fabulous shop!
My favorite piece has to be the Black Silk Lily Brooch, Statement Piece. What a wonderful bold statement piece.
The most interesting wedding color palette that I've seen, that actually worked, was silver grey and orange. The touches of bright orange really made the silver grey shine.

I really love the lily hair pin in aqua. Love the color!
The most INTERESTING wedding colors that I have seen at a wedding had to be when one of my cousins was married in the late 70s. She had a pastel rainbow colored wedding. Peach, yellow, blue, pink, green and lavender bridesmaid's dresses with guys in matching ruffled-shirt tuxes! WILD! Not sure you could do that today!LOL Thanks for this opportunity.

These are SO pretty! I am a sucker for a statement headband, so you know the Magnolia headband in frost is my #1 pick.
I love wedding blogs (and it seems like everyone is getting married these days) so I've seen a lot of amazing wedding color palettes, but I have to say I like the sophistication of a grey/mustard wedding party any day.

I love that the flowers look silky and romantic yet still durable and not flimsy. The Pale Silver Silk Dupioni Magnolia Headband Fascinator has such a great color and is the perfect size!
Also, the most interesting wedding combo I saw was kelly green and pink -- they were very preppy!

Muted Gold Silk Dupioni Headband Fascinator LOVE GIVES YOU WINGS.
I'd have to say that my favorite wedding color scheme was my own (not that I'm biased or anything) - black and white and polka dots all over. What's not to love?

favorite is the Bridal Wild Rose Hair Flower Clips, Set of 3! I love them and wish I had them when I got married!
I recently saw a wedding with light lime, cream and cherry red. It sounds weird but the girls wore light lime dresses with cream shashes and they all had on cherry red lipstick with Red Heals and red flowers. It was very pretty!

I'm pretty sure I'm going to do navy with a few silver accents at my upcoming wedding so I love that Pale Silver Silk Dupioni Magnolia Headband Fascinator.
As far as really great wedding colors, my friend did this really cool green and against all of her bridesmaids' blonde hair it really "popped." The most "interesting" color combo I have seen was this teal green/blue color with purple-I turned to my fiance and said, "I feel like the bridesmaids all look like Ninja Turtles!"
dlogstonATgmailDOTcom
I really like the Small Lily Flower Hair Pin in Black Silk Dupioni BLACK TIE-- classic and elegant. Modern with a little vintage love. Excellent!
The color palette I really like for Spring/early Summer is all the men in grey and all the women in pale yellow, with the bride in a soft yellow white.
Thanks for the chance!
secretcake (at) yahoo (dot) com
I love the Magnolia Flower Headband!
My favorite wedding color palette is light blue with dark purple.
I think the Art Deco Headband Fascinator, Champagne and Black EMPIRE is very dramatic and unique. The best wedding theme I've been to was some friends who got married on boxing day (day after christmas day), and used the great room of an old hotel that was still decorated for christmas. By dressing in silver, black and red, they didn't have to change a thing for decorations, and it was very seasonal.

My favourite items (couldn't pick just one) from Threadrare are:
-Pale Silver Silk Dupioni Magnolia Headband Fascinator FROST
-Lily Flower Wedding Headband in White MODERN ROMANCE
-Black Silk Lily Brooch, Statement Piece NOIR (this is sooo cool)
The small lily hair pin/clip is so beautiful and since I'm getting married this August, I could defintely see myself using this with my birdcage veil.
The most interesting wedding palatte I have ever seen is rich multi-colour jewel tones. The bridal party wore a rich dark cherry but the decor was bright, virbant and rich. They did tables in red, lime, purple & orange (but rich tones like I said before) and it was just soo stunning. The centerpieces were made up of the same colour as the table cloth & napkins, but various flowers and the vases matched as well. It was soo nice. However, my favourite is (my own!) turquoise & silver ;)

I love the Wild Rose set of 3 bridal combs - they are so gorgeous! The best wedding color scheme I've seen was probably my best friend's. She was married in October in the midwest and we all wore black with shawls that were cranberry on one side and orange on the other. The maid of honor wore the orange side out, the rest of the bridesmaids the cranberry side out. While the "fall" colors aren't necessarily my favorite, the photos in front of the yellow/orange/red fall trees were absolutely amazing!

My favorite item is the Bridal Wild Rose Hair Flower Clips
( Set of 3). The most interesting ( and not on a good way) wedding color theme that I have witnessed is from a wedding in the 1970's. The colors were electric yellow & green. I was a bridesmaid in a ugly polyester floor length dress in the blinding yellow & green with a white collar & sash. Even the wedding invitations were florescent yellow! The marraige only lasted 2 years.
Thank you.

Oooo! My favorite piece is her "Pale Silver Silk Dupioni Magnolia Headband Fascinator FROST"! So cute!! As for wedding colors...my favorite is black white and red-I don't know why, I just think it can really pull together a wedding and make it look classy. The most interesting I've ever seen, is where the bridesmaids have worn all different colors - 10 bridemaids, 10 different colors- and the groomsmen matched the girl they walked with. It was interesting!!

I love the Art Deco Headband Fascinator!
I have sadly not been to any weddings since I was 6, so I have no interesting wedding color palette to contribute.

Gorgeous, breathtaking pieces! All of her flower pins and combs are stunning! I would be honored to wear one as a bride next year! I'm also especially fond of her Art Deco Headbands, and the Black and Pale silver one is so classy!
Mu favorite wedding color combo was actually white and pale yellow chiffon for the bridemaid dresses....the wedding had a lovely old-fahioned feel to it :)

I'd love to see a classic pink and white one.
I love the Lily Flower Statement Headband in Metallic PRECIOUS METAL, and I've seen and loved the colors of the ice palette(from light blue to gray to white) on a wedding.
