Yesterday we made muffins. Today we make them look festive! Toppers, wrappers and cute little signs — because in my backyard, no one's touchin' the goodies until they are properly identified.
These little flag and firework toppers are super simple to whip up and you'll find the printable art at the end of this post.
To make the flags, cut each one to size and fold in half. Thoroughly cover one side with craft glue and place a toothpick in the middle. I find flat toothpicks work best for these. Fold back over and press to secure.
To make the firework toppers, cut a rectangle containing one blue and one red firework. Fold in half trying to center up placement. While folded, cut around 1/4 of the circle with scissors.
Apply craft glue to one inside half and place a toothpick in the middle. Fold back over and press to secure. Once dry, cut out the rest of the circle.
For the flavor sign you see in the background of the opening photo, I took the cake table signs I created for my wedding and just changed up the colors and wording. You will also find those for download below, as well as a page with six blank signs in the same red, white and blue color scheme.
Creating wrappers for your cakes is a perfect way to customize your decorations for any event. You can use scrapbook paper or even create your own personal designs with names or photos for a shower or birthday party.
When using these wrappers, it doesn't matter if your cakes are baked in liners or not. I usually skip the liners when possible if I'm making wrappers, but certain cakes just don't bake well without liners.
To make the wrappers, print and cut out the template. Trace onto your paper and cut to size. If you'd like a decorated top edge, cut the bottom and two sides with standard scissors first.
Then cut the top with a pair of patterned shears. Depending on what you're wrapping and the size, be it a simple muffin or a cupcake topped with a mound of frosting, you may need to adjust the height of your wrapper by cutting the top edge above or below the template line.
For a standard frosted cupcake, the provided template is usually a good size. For the muffins I show here, I ended up cutting the top edge about 1/4" down from the template line.
You'll also want to check how the wrapper fits around your cake, then secure the ends with tape wrapped from the outside under the bottom to the inside. This helps hold the wrapper to shape. If you only apply tape or glue to one side, it will bow out at the connection.
I hope these projects bring on a little inspiration to dress up your next baking adventure. As always, have fun and be creative! I'd love to see what you create.
