The Shoe Review

I remember my 16th birthday like it was yesterday. My parents took me to Toronto to see Phantom of the Opera and go shoe shopping. I got my first pair of knee high black boots and it was true love. I wore them to school with a denim skirt, black tank top and colored tights, and boy did I feel fabulous. Keep in mind this was 1994, and rockin' such a style wasn't quite as common as it is today. My obsession was already deeply rooted at this point in my life, however, and I think I have my parents (and the red T-strap mary janes I had when I was three) to blame.

With that I welcome you to a new column here on the blog dedicated to one of my favorite things, shoes! Each month I will review a few pairs of shoes that I either own or have tried and discuss the pros, the cons, how I would wear them and where to find them. I thought it was only fitting to start with some shoes from my favorite brand, Seychelles. They find the perfect balance of vintage elements and modern design, have awesome colors and are always comfortable.

First up, the Potion Pump. This is currently my favorite shoe in my closet. I will tell you, I'm a mary jane girl, plain and simple, but besides that, there is so much to love about this shoe. I wear heels casually a lot and the low 2 1/4" height of this style is perfect for that. The chunkier wedge design also really helps with comfort, you barely feel like you are wearing heels. Seychelles typically have nice padded, cushy insoles and these hold true to that.

I found most Seychelles run pretty true to size. I typically wear an 8.5 and size down to an 8 about 40% of the time. I can comfortably wear an 8.5 or an 8 in this style, but the 8 fits a bit better for me.

I got these in the clay and teal, which is a unique and lovely color combination. While I think it's a versatile color, some may disagree. The clay is more of a mushroom color, rather than a rich brown, so I don't think it looks good with anything chocolate or warm brown colored. Because I loved them so much, I also got them in the vintage white. At first glance, I never would have expected to love them, but upon receiving them, I really do. They seem to match just about everything in my closet. The darker trim almost adapts to what you're wearing, looking more brown or more grey depending, making them even more versatile. They also come in black with a burgundy trim.

I definitely recommend these shoes! And if you're not a fan of wearing pointed toes, this is a nice alternative that you can wear for work or a special occasion. I think they look just as cute with jeans and a tee as they do with a dress, and here are a few looks I put together:

WHERE TO BUY POTION:
endless.com $79.95 (free shipping both ways)
zappos.com $84 (free shipping both ways)

Next up, the Duchess T-Strap Pump. This style is a little dressier in my opinion, but just as cute. The heel is higher at 3" which made them just a little too high for the day to day wear I was looking for, but perfect with a dress or skirt or for a casual night on the town. I tried them in the plum color, and it was really cool. They fit true to size and also come in black, brown and taupe.

The little toe cut out is a cute accent but didn't quite work for me and it may be different for everyone depending on the shape of your foot. I expected to see a little toe, but it fell in between mine, so I just saw the sole of the shoe. It didn't look bad, but just a little weird. If the heel had been lower or if I still worked in an office, I would have kept them anyways because they were super cute, very comfortable and the color was beautiful. I would recommend these shoes!

Here are some ways to wear them them:

WHERE TO BUY DUCHESS:
endless.com $66 - $90 (free shipping both ways)
zappos.com $76 - $80 (free shipping both ways)
amazon.com $47 - $90 (free shipping)

Last up, the most practical of all, the Boy Short Flat. I was really drawn to the beautiful plum color and the ankle strap detailing in these shoes. I also thought they would be very versatile for the warm months to wear with capris and shorts or a cute sundress. I was not disappointed at all when I received them but the fit is a little strange so they may not work for everyone.

These shoes are fairly narrow, which I like because I often have problems with the sides gapping on flats, but if you're foot is any wider than average, they may be snug on you. The ankle strap is adjustable with the buckle and also moves through the loop in the back, so that shouldn't be a problem for anyone when it comes to fit. The top of the shoe is cut low and wide, so you do see some toe cleavage, which some may not like (I don't mind) and the sides may hit you in a funny place. As with most flats, they have minimal arch support, but the insole is cushy and comfortable. The 8.5 was a little long on me and the 8 was a little snug, but I kept the smaller size as I think they will stretch a bit.

These worked out nicely for me and I can't wait for some warm weather, but if you try them, I recommend wearing them around the house for at least an hour or so to make sure they don't rub funny on your feet. Also, as I mentioned before, the ankle strap does slide in the back but on one pair I tried it was stuck as if it wasn't supposed to move, so you may have to fidget with it a bit to loosen up the leather.

Here are a few ways I would wear them:

top · bag · shorts

WHERE TO BUY BOY SHORT:
endless.com $50 - $80 (free shipping both ways)
shoes.com $70 (free shipping one way)

This column will be a work in progress, so if you have any feedback on what else you'd like to know about a shoe or what you'd like to see, I'd love to hear it!

Shoe Review Name Game Vote!

I Love Shoes by LolasRoom

Thanks to everyone who entered this month's modified Name Game! My first official shoe review will be up tomorrow, but first, I need a name for the column. I've narrowed down the almost 200 entries to my top ten, so now it's your turn!

Please vote for your favorite name from the options below. The column will run monthly featuring a few pairs of shoes which I either own or have tried. I will discuss the style, the pros, the cons, what to wear them with and where to find them, so keep in mind relevancy when picking a name.

You may only vote one time but you can ask others to stop by and vote, too. The voting will be open until 11am (est) tomorrow morning and the results will be kept hidden until I post my first shoe review shortly thereafter!

Six Things: Shoes (of course!)

1. Tiger Lily Moccasin darlingtonia $129
2. Vintage Leather Boots allencompanyinc $155
3. Spring Equinox Flat HydraHeart $48
5. Handmade Leather Flip Flops LilaSandals $69

Shoe Poll Results

Yep, it's all about shoes again today, starting with the results of last week's shoe polls. With over 150 people chiming in, about half own between 11 and 30 pairs of shoes, with 6 to 10 pairs not far behind and funny enough, over 50 pairs following that. Flats are the style of shoe most often worn, followed by stylish sneaks and boots with black or grey being the most common color. Lastly, comfort reigned when looking for the perfect shoe followed by uniqueness, versatility and low price.

So where do I fall in these categories? You may be able to guess. I own over 50 pairs of shoes, I most commonly wear heels (though low), followed by flats, and the majority of the shoes in my closet are a color in the rainbow (or a muted shade thereof). I do look for comfort and versatility but I'll admit to throwing those to the wayside if the cuteness is overwhelming.

I plan on sharing every pair of shoes in my closet with you someday soon, I just need to figure out the best way to photograph them. Yeah, that could take awhile. In the meantime, stop back later today for The Shoe Review Name Game vote and my first official shoe review tomorrow!

Slow Food in a Modern Kitchen

Hi everyone, Shawna here from Pinkkiss Pottery with another tasty idea from my kitchen to yours. I don’t know about your neck of the woods but here in the Northeast…baby, it’s cold outside! To me there is nothing more comforting on a cold snowy day than a steaming hot cup of homemade soup in a handmade mug and I have recently acquired a whole new appreciation for the power of soup.

So what’s so great about soup you ask?
1. It’s easy to make and makes your house smell delicious.
2. It freezes well and can taste even better after a day in the fridge.
3. It can be super healthy and easily vegetarian.
4. It makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
5. It’s a great excuse to bake bread to mop up all the broth!
6. It’s also a great way to use up any leftover food in your fridge.

After being buried in 30 inches of snow I found myself needing to make something cozy to curl up with that would last for a couple of days. A few months ago I bought a cookbook called Love Soup by Anna Thomas and was excited to finally crack it open and try some of the recipes. This book is chock full of delicious, healthy recipes that are sure to warm you all the way to your toes. During our super snowstorm I cooked up mushroom soup, potato leek soup, cabbage soup and a new favorite, garlic soup with poached egg.

After your soup is finished simmering serve it up in some beautiful handmade ceramic bowls, perfectly crafted for slurping!

I love this one by Keith Phillips, which can easily go into the oven or under the broiler to melt a layer of gooey cheese on a cup of French onion soup.

Here is a lovely set of nesting bowls by Jason Russell to serve a big bowl, a little bowl or a bowl that is just right!

A bowl by Kristen Kieffer would be perfect to serve an elegant cream soup or a light broth.

I just love the design of this soup mug by Vegan Dish, perfect for cuddling under a blanket and sipping a hearty vegan soup!

I’m sure that you will be able to stay nice and toasty with help from Love Soup and these talented Etsy potters, but just in case you are one of the lucky ones who live in a snow free zone, the book also boasts a section of delicious cold soups for the warmer weather.

See you next month! ~ Shawna of Pinkkiss Pottery

Spotlight: vadjutka

I've mentioned before how one of my favorite aspects of being involved with Etsy is the amazing people I have been able to meet and build friendships with, not only locally but all around the world. This year in Spotlight I will be featuring many of these global friends to learn what challenges there may be for an international artist selling on an American-based site like Etsy, and to remember just how worldly this handmade community is.

Today we travel to Hungary and meet the talented Judit of vadjutka. Living two lives, one as a professional and the second as a crafter, she began creating jewelry in 2002 making small seed bead necklaces. She has continued to evolve her style over the years and has most recently begun incorporating fabric into her designs. Judit believes every piece of jewelry has its own personality, just as us humans do, and that one day every piece will find its owner, with whom it matches perfectly.

Read on to learn more about the origin of her shop name, her comical love of The Divine Comedy and what she listens to while she works. You can also enter to win one of her beautiful necklaces!

Where did you grow up and where do you currently live?
I grew up where I live at the moment, in Budapest, Hungary.

How long have you been selling on Etsy?
two years

What, if any, formal training have you had in your craft?
I did not get any formal training.

Judit with fleurfatale's Violet Cat

Do you sell on Etsy full time or do you have a day job?
I have a part time job. I am a market researcher specialized in media.

What made you decide to open up shop on Etsy?
I have been selling my jewelry in shops and via my newsletter before, and opening an own shop seemed to be the next step.

Where did your shop name come from?
It is my nickname. My family name is Wild, and it means "vad” in Hungarian. My first name is Judit, and "jutka” is a nickname version for Judit.

What do you like least about your craft?
Monotonity, repeating some steps again and again. But I can handle :)

Do you have any advice for other sellers on Etsy or those thinking about pursuing their craft?
I would say these to someone who wants to open a shop:
• Be patient and persistent
• Always look for the possibilities in every situation even if it seems bad
• Try to find your own way – and be prepared, it is not easy

Are there any challenges being an International seller on an American based site?
Challenges? I think it is a great chance to be an international seller on an American based site. It is not only chance for a wider audience, but also to learn a completley new culture, which is very different from the one I grew up in.

Five Etsy Shops you love
JKphotography
lilarubyking
fleurfatale
mariansmale
gretchenmist

Where is the coolest place you have ever been?
I had two big journies in my life so far, and one of them was to Southern China in 2005. We visited a beautiful river, named Li river. It is surrounded by sugarcane formed hills, and it is just amazing. You can find a few photos here.

What is your favorite leisure time activity?
Cooking, eating, hiking, photography, friends, dancing

What is the stupidest thing you have ever done?
I wrote this above the entrance of my parents’ flat: "Abandon hope all ye who enter here”.
We were studying the Divine Comedy from Dante in high school, and I was fascinated by this phrase. Well….they werent happy about it, and made me to erase it. :)

These are my fave songs – I collect their youtube versions:
Yesterday's Mistakes by Oi Va Voi
Sinnerman by Nina Simone
Gabriel by Lamb
Samson by Regina Spektor

What does the future hold for you and your shop?
I hope many sales, many new ideas, and new, undiscovered ways of selling internationally :)

The Shoe Review Name Game

I Love Shoes by LolasRoom

As I mentioned earlier, I'll be starting a new shoe review column here on the blog but am stuck on a name, as usual! 'The Shoe Review' is what I got so far, which isn't too bad with the little rhyme and what not, but chances are you creative folks out there can come up with something better. That means it's time for a Name Game!

To submit an entry, please leave a comment on this post with your name idea(s) for my new column. You can enter up to 10 names and they can be submitted all at once or at different times.

You have until Wednesday, February 24 at 10pm (est) to enter and you MUST INCLUDE your first name AND your Etsy username or email address with every entry. I'll pick my ten favorite name ideas and post them for a vote on Thursday afternoon, winner gets their choice of any pair of earrings or a ring from my shop.

Be creative and have fun!

Shoe Polls!

It's Friday and I'm blogging about shoes. Doesn't get much better than that, does it? For those who do not know, I have a shoe obsession. Kinda like the goats, but much more serious.

I'm ramping up to start a new shoe review column here on the blog, along with a few other shoe-related goodies, so it's shoe day! First I have a few polls for you and later this afternoon I'll have a Name Game of sorts for the new column. So I hope you'll take a minute to give me some feedback below and then stop back in a bit for more details on the naming contest!

Goats on the Roof

Yep, I said Goats of the Roof, and I meant it. If you ever happen to find yourself in Rabun County, Georgia, I highly recommend you stop by.

I have this little goat obsession, you see. So when we headed south to visit Tyler's family after the wedding, I was happier than a Georgia peach to hear about this gem.

Situated right on Highway 441 running through Northern Georgia you'll find this happy little place where goats spend their days meandering from roof top to roof top and basking in the warm southern sun.

There's a rattly old bicycle hooked up to a conveyer belt which allows goat fanatics (like me) to fill a cup with food and deliver it up to the eagerly waiting billies. They often came running at the sound of the squeaky wheels, but for those who missed it, the food cup rings a bell at the end of the line which brings the hungry herd.

Inside the goat-topped buildings you'll find fun things like homemade ice cream and fudge, stuffed raccoons with cracker jack boxes and the best sign in the entire world.

And outside, well, you'll just find goats on the roof.
