The Shoe Review: Fabulous Flats!

It's time for a new edition of The Show Review! If you missed the debut of this series, you can check it out here.

Since 44% of woman wear flats most often, today I have five fabulous flats of different styles and price ranges to share with you. Since it's finally warmed up a bit here in the Northeast, I even modeled them! Granted, my photos aren't great and the backgrounds are a little lack luster, but I've been a bit contained while on 'Dad duty', so I did my best! And here we go…

First up is the Oblique Skimmer from Moda Spana. I'll start by saying that I consider burgundy an underappreciated neutral. Look through your closet and chances are, burgundy will go with at least 75% of the items in there. Same goes for navy blue and mustard yellow, in my opinion. If you're looking to spice up your shoe love life but aren't ready for really bold colors, start with burgundy, it won't let you down.

With the glossy finish, ruffle detail and brass accents, this flat is perfect for work with a skirt or trouser pants, but they also look cute with jeans, shorts or capris.

For comfort, I'd give these shoes about 7 out of 10, which in my world means they are perfect for wearing around work all day or a few hours out and about running errands or shopping, but I just wouldn't want to walk a marathon in them. The uppers are a bit stiff, but do start to break in to your foot over time, and on me at least, don't cut into the back of my foot or rub anywhere funny - which is the most important thing I look for.

For fit, they seem to run about a half size small. I most commonly wear an 8 but needed these in an 8.5. The rounded toe leaves you plenty of room, as opposed to a pointed toe, and the width is moderate. I have slightly narrow feet so flats often gap on me, and while these don't gap much at all, there is still a bit of room in your feet are normal width or slightly wider.

Top Sears Apostrophe (old!) • Skirt Mod Cloth $29.99

As with any flat, you don't get much arch support, but there seems to be room for a thin insole if needed. The soles do not click when you walk (which people usually love or hate) and the shoes feel sturdy and well made. I did read in other reviews that some folks lost the little ball accents, so be sure to tighten them down before each wear (or remove them, add a touch of superglue and screw them back on!)

Marked down to about half their original $83 price tag, at $45, they'll keep you and your feet happy for years to come.

They also come in black or charcoal gray with silver balls (LOVE!), but the sizes left are limited, though they do have them in C/D width too. See Amazon for black, gray and wide widths and a few sizes of the burgundy - where they are on sale even cheaper!

WHERE TO BUY:

amazon.com $23.23 - $34.99

This next shoe is actually a wedge, if you want to get technical, but I still call it a flat. It's the Shauna Wedge from Target, and with it's $20 price tag, you can feel guiltless about adding these to your wardrobe even if you only wear them for a season or two.

This is the style of shoe that really screams versatility. The small wedge adds just a little height and style without the dressiness of a full blow heel and they look adorable with just about anything - skirts, dress, trousers, skinny jeans, flared jeans, shorts - you name it, these shoes will probably work. They also come in four colors, all of which I love. I have the black and my mom has the metallic bronze (which is awesome) and can be worn as a neutral as well.

For comfort, I give them a 6 out of 10. I wouldn't want to do a ton of walking in them, as they scrunch the toes a bit. I wear a lot of pointed shoes and don't usually have a problem, but these do squeeze a little, though I only notice after walking for more than 20 minutes. Being spoiled by wearing mostly leather shoes, I do notice these are synthetic, with less breathe and flexibility to them, but nothing that bothers me, especially when wearing tights or trouser socks.

Aside from that, I find them pretty comfortable. They don't cut in or rub anywhere, and the wedge bottom makes them feel like walking in a flat. I wouldn't spend more than their $20 price tag on them, but for that price, I'll get more than my moneys worth out of them.

Top Goodwill $3 • Jeans DKNY Soho Boot, Macy's $39

For fit, they run small, at least a half size, if not a full size. It depends on the width of your foot and the size of your toes, since they are pointed. I usually wear an 8 and got these in an 8.5. As I mentioned, they do crunch a bit over time, but the 9 was just a tad big.

They aren't too wide to gap on me, but there is a bit of extra room if you have a slightly wider foot. If you're looking for a versatile, stylish, inexpensive black shoe or a fun pop of color without breaking the bank, give these a try.

WHERE TO BUY:
Target (in store or online) $19.99

· · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · ·

Next up is the Golden Smile Flat from Mod Cloth. With the versatile chocolate brown coloring, cute accents and $29 price tag, I couldn't pass on these. They are so much more than your 'basic brown flat' but can be worn just as much.

I was weary to order these after reading some lack luster reviews, so I wasn't expecting much, but I absolutely love them. Yes they are thin, upper and sole, but you get what you pay for. Yes they are synthetic, but they are soft, flexible and kind of feel like slippers to me!

Top Goodwill $3 • Belt Anthropologie $32 • Capris Limited Brand, consignment shop $9

I've worn them with skirts and tights, jeans and capris and they look good with everything. The little gold accents add just a touch of dressiness and interest to any outfit.

They fit true to size on me and though the toe is pointed, it's subtle enough to not squeeze at all. Because the material has some give, these seem like they would work on a wider foot as well. They won't last forever, but if I get a season or two of wear out of them, they're worth it.

WHERE TO BUY:
Mod Cloth $29.99 ($7 shipping, free returns & exchanges)

· · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · ·

Because of their comfort, style and color, this next pair of shoes has quickly become a staple in my wardrobe, the Fabsy Woven Flat by Nine West. Though fairly casual in style, I love them with a cute skirt and they are also perfect with jeans or shorts.

Cardgian Salvation Army $3.50 • Tank Top TJ Maxx $9Belt Anthropologie $34 • Skirt clevernettle $20

I've literally walked miles in these shoes while in Pittsburgh and they were great on my feet. The leather is butter soft and awesome against your skin. They stretch and mold nicely to the shape of your feet but still feel well made and have a sturdy sole.

Again, you can't expect too much in the way of arch support, but hey, they aren't sneakers. They're low on the sides, but not uncomfortably, and are raised around the heel to nicely cup your foot and stay in place without any pressure.

For me, they fit true to size, though they were snug at first. I also tried a half size up but could tell by the leather that they would stretch and I'm glad I went with the snugger fit (my normal shoe size). They did stretch and shape nicely, but not too much.

I find the natural color to look great with everything in my closet from colors to neutrals and even black, but the shoe does also come in a muted army green and two styles of black.

They are pricier at $60, but if you like the style of this shoe, you won't be disappointed. And as with all my other Nine West shoes, I expect they will hold up nicely for many years to come.

WHERE TO BUY:
Endless $58.95 (free shipping and returns)
Zappos $58.95 (free shipping and returns)

Last, but certainly not least, is the most unique pair I have for you today, the Pythagorean Pretty Shoe from Mod Cloth. Made by designer Jeffrey Campbell, they are leather, the quality is fabulous and they are built to last, but you pay for that with the $99 price tag. Worth every penny though, in my opinion.

Not only are they unique and adorable, but I find them to be super comfortable and flattering on the foot. They look cute with skirts and shorts and I love them with skinny jeans, though I personally don't like them with wider leg jeans, but that's just my preference.

I found them to run just a tad large for me. I usually wear an 8 and ended up getting these in 7.5, though I really could have worn either size. You may want to try both and see which fits better for you. The biggest problem with the 8 for me was I found them to be too wide across the toes, mostly on the inner edge, I could see a good 1/4" of the red lining beyond my foot. The 7.5 was snug when I got them, but they have already stretched out a bit.

The straps across the foot keep them feeling secure and give a flattering shape, and while they are also adjustable, I'm not sure they would really do anything for the fit. The heels cup nicely but doesn't dig in or rub at all.

I can comfortably walk all days in these shoes, with many stops along they way to say thank you for all the compliments I would be getting on them :)

Cardigan Urban Outfitters $29 • Top TJ Maxx $9 • Jeans Calvin Klein Skinny, Macys $39

If you're a lover of unique shoes like me, don't pass these up.

WHERE TO BUY:
Mod Cloth $99.99 ($7 shipping, free returns & exchanges)

In the Kitchen: Sugar Free Peanut Butter Muffins and Pudding

Today's recipes are the first of many sugar-free and naturally sweetened desserts and snacks that I'll be sharing with you here on the blog. With many sugar free recipes, there are often variations and substitutions you can make in the type of natural sweetener you use, as well as other ingredients, that will affect the flavor and sweetness of the dish, so in addition to the basic ingredients, you will see these substitutions listed along with notes on how to sweeten the dish even more with ingredients that may add sugar, for those who are trying to cut back or eat healthy but aren't ready to entirely cut out sugar.

If you're not used to eating sugar free treats, even at their sweetest these recipes may take some getting used to, but the more you cut excess sugar out of your diet, the sweeter natural foods will taste.

I especially love these muffins. I call them my power muffins! Packed with peanut butter, whole wheat and a touch of honey for sweetness, they are perfect for a grab and go breakfast, mid day snack or served with soup or salad for lunch or dinner. Drizzle on a bit on honey or natural fruit jam for a healthy dessert alternative. If peanut butter isn't your thing, try using almond or cashew butter. There are many ways to customize these muffins to suit your tastes and dietary needs.

SUGAR FREE PEANUT BUTTER MUFFINS

Ingredients
2 cups whole wheat pastry flour
1 tbsp baking powder
1/3 cup natural peanut butter
1/3 cup honey
1/4 cup oil
1 1/4 cups original or vanilla* soy, almond or rice milk

*Note that some vanilla milks have a form of sugar in them. If you use a plain milk you can try adding 1/4 - 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract to the muffins for a little extra flavor.

Substitutions
You can use any kind of natural nut butter in these muffins such as almond, cashew or hazelnut in place of the peanut butter for a different taste or in case of allergies. You can also use any type of molasses in place of the honey. Try blackstrap molasses for an extra boost of iron!

Stir flour and baking powder in a bowl, set aside. Mix peanut butter, oil, honey and milk in a separate large bowl until smooth.

The peanut butter tends to clump in the middle, so I find a whisk especially useful. A glass bowl also lets you look at the bottom to see if it's mixed thoroughly.

Add the dry mixture to the liquid mixture and stir with minimal strokes, do not beat.

Batter will be a little lumpy looking. Line 12 muffin tins with paper (or grease and flour) and fill about two thirds full.

Bake in a preheated 350° F oven for 20 - 25 minutes, until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

· · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · ·

Continuing with the peanut butter (yes, it's my favorite!), here is a super quick and easy recipe to create a healthy, sugar free pudding. This recipe can also be made using different nut butters such as almond or hazelnut.

SUGAR FREE PEANUT BUTTER PUDDING

Ingredients
1 small ripe banana
1/2 cup plain or vanilla* nonfat yogurt
1/2 cup natural peanut butter (or any nut butter)
1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

*I prefer to use vanilla yogurt as it adds a little extra flavor and sweetness but do note that there may be sugar in it. If you're going for totally sugar free, use the plain. Otherwise, look for a vanilla yogurt that contains natural rather than artificial sweeteners, or learn how to make your own here!

Combine all ingredients in a blender or food processor. Process first on low speed, then on high speed until smooth. Refrigerate and store for up to 4 days. Serves 4.

Slow Food in a Modern Kitchen

Hi there, Shawna here from Pinkiss Pottery with another tasty treat for your slow kitchen. Since last month we covered making your own granola, I thought this month we would learn to make our own yogurt to go with your tasty granola. You're all experts at making granola now, right?

Yogurt is simply fermented milk or cream and making yogurt is a super simple process that you really don’t need any special equipment for, you can just use what you have around the house (of course you can purchase a yogurt maker if you're super into kitchen gadgets but it’s not really necessary). The one tool you may want to pick up is a candy thermometer, it takes some of the guesswork out, but you can still make yogurt without one. So lets get started!

Organic Yogurt Starter Cultures by Wells of Health

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
• A medium size saucepan
• A larger saucepan or stockpot that your smaller pot can fit into (optional)
• A candy thermometer (optional)
• A clean metal spoon / whisk
• A glass bowl or glass jars (a great way to recycle your sauce jars) to keep your yogurt in
• A way to keep your yogurt mixture warm, you can use a bath towel wrapped around a glass container, a picnic cooler with hot water in it, a hot water bottle or heating pad (be super careful if you use an electric heating pad and DO NOT leave it unattended), a gas oven with the pilot light on or a thermos. Your goal is to keep the yogurt above 80° F for an extended period of time.
• 1 quart of good quality milk (you can use any fat content of milk but the higher the fat the thicker your yogurt will turn out, I have read about people adding powdered milk to low fat milk to make it thicker but I haven’t personally tried that)
• 2-3 Tablespoons of starter yogurt (you can use store bought plain yogurt with live active cultures *good bacteria* for the first batch and save some of your homemade yogurt for the next batch)

* Make sure all of your tools are clean and dry before you start this. A good run through the dishwasher should do the trick.

Vintage mixing bowl and refrigerator dish by Jadite Kate
Vintage Thermos by
The Brown Sweater

Step 1: Fill the larger saucepan with water and place the smaller pan inside of it (a water bath helps keep the milk from scorching so you don’t have to watch as carefully but you can just heat the milk directly on the stove if you don’t want to do this step). Add your milk to the smaller saucepan and heat until it reaches 180° F (if you are not using a thermometer you should be able to see the milk turn foamy with a skin over the top). Don’t stir the milk during this step or your yogurt might get grainy.

Step 2: Take the saucepan off of the heat and let cool to 110-115° F (you should be able to hold the pot for 10 seconds without burning yourself). You can place the pan in a bath of ice water to speed up this process. Once the milk has cooled, take about a cup of it out and mix in the yogurt starter, whisk this into the rest of the milk.

Step 3: Transfer your milk mixture to the glass jars or container and create your warm place of choice. If you are using the picnic cooler, simply wrap your yogurt container in a towel and place in the cooler next to a container of hot water. Leave it alone for 4-24 hours depending on how you like your yogurt. I prefer to simply do this before bed and leave it overnight. If you have trouble digesting milk try leaving the yogurt for 24 hours, the lactose in the milk will be eaten by the good bacteria making it easier to digest (change the hot water at least once during this time).

Step 4: Move your yogurt to the fridge to chill.

How can you enjoy your homemade yogurt?
• Spoon over fruit and top with your homemade granola!
• Use it as a substitute for sour cream
• Use it instead of milk with your morning cereal
• Make smoothies
• Make Greek style yogurt by placing your yogurt in a cheesecloth lined colander and letting it strain until thick.
• Add 3 / 4 cup of sugar to 3 cups of strained yogurt and run it through your ice cream maker to make the most delicious frozen treat.
• Strain your yogurt even longer to make yogurt cheese
• Mix 1 Tbs. yogurt and 1 Tbs. honey for a moisturizing face mask
• Swirl with jam and freeze for popsicles

Did you know that yogurt has been around for at least 4,500 years? Many different cultures claim to have invented it but there is no clear evidence that anyone can truly claim the first yogurt. Yogurt can provide 9 grams of protein per every 6 ounces and can help in the prevention of osteoporosis, reduce the risk of high blood pressure, help regulate your digestive system while helping you feel fuller therefore reducing your caloric intake.

Eating yogurt has so many health benefits and making it yourself cuts down on harmful (and in many cases hard to recycle) plastic containers while reducing your grocery bill so I hope you give it a try and let us know how you enjoy your yogurt in the comments section of this post!

Spotlight: Karuski

We're traveling the globe once again this week to visit Finland and meet the talented Minna of Karuski. Her sweet purses, pouches and jewelry are made from repurposed and vintage materials, as she not only loves hunting for these treasures but sees that it's her responsibility as a designer and crafter to save our precious natural resources and avoid throwing things to landfills.

Read on to learn more about how she got started, what challenges she faces as an international seller and how spends her free time. You can also enter to win a lovely purse from her shop!

Where did you grow up and where do you currently live?
I was born and raised in a rather small city in East Finland where I lived until I turned 21. Now I reside in an even smaller town in Southern Finland. Between these two places Helsinki was my home for over 10 years.

How long have you been selling on Etsy?
I signed up in February 2008 and opened my shop in September. So I've been selling for about a year and a half now.

Do you sell on Etsy full time or do you have a day job?
I do work on my little craft business full time and Etsy is part of the picture. I have a few boutiques and a couple of online shops here in Finland selling my purses and jewelry and I'm in the process of designing an online shop to provide convenient service for my local customers (which will still take some time until it is up and running!)

What, if any, formal training have you had in your craft?
I have a Bachelor of Art in Applied Arts with a major in textile design. I chose a handmade life right from the beginning. My studies involved lots of weaving but I haven't gotten started with my own loom just yet. One interesting fact is that I didn't learn to sew in school but through my internship in a craft studio.

What made you decide to open up shop on Etsy?
I found Etsy through some blog which had mentioned my work and found it a lovely place right away. At that time I was busy with other things (I was part of a design collective which has a small shop in Helsinki). This made me postpone with opening my Etsy shop but I'm glad I finally did it.

Where did your shop name come from?
Karuski means candy in a local dialect in the area I lived my childhood. It is not widely used, it is more like an old fashioned way of saying it but I remember my Dad always talked about karuski. Later on it felt nice and natural to pick this name for my label and business. Kind of like returning home.

What do you like least about your craft?
Perhaps it is the fact that being a one woman business I really need to handle every aspect by myself. I'm lucky enough to have a partner who works in a design field, he is of a great help and support for me.

Do you have any advice for other sellers on Etsy or those thinking about pursuing their craft?
I think it is important to stay true to oneself so take a moment to think about what you are actually making. Is it something you really believe in and are proud to present to the world? If you enjoy what you do and sleep your nights well you are probably on a right track so keep on working. Also, make sure to get connected with your colleagues and customers worldwide.

Are there any challenges being an International seller on an American based site?
I have a feeling that being located outside the US it requires some extra effort from me to become a trusted and successful seller on Etsy. I am trying my best to provide all sufficient information from product care to international shipping to convince my potential buyers I am a worthy choice.

Where is the coolest place you have ever been?
I loved Japan and its diversity in all aspects I could imagine. But there are really so many great places around the world it is hard to name just one.

What is your favorite leisure time activity?
I recently picked up with horse back riding after a 15 years pause. I go to a riding class on a weekly basis and love it very much.

What is the strangest thing that has ever happened to you?
Many strange things has happened to me but... I had just met my boyfriend and he was about to move from his flat to a new place. Without knowing the street where I lived in Helsinki he found a suitable apartment next door so we literally became neighbors. First it felt strange but in the end it was pretty convenient. After some time he moved into my apartment and we have lived together ever after!

Share some of your favorite music
I tend to choose music by a mood but I never get tired of these rock bands:
Guns n' Roses, The Hellacopters, Hardcore Superstar, Backyard Babies & outside the rock genre: Björk
ps. I've seen all of above live at least once and this adds a whole lot of deepness to liking them

If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be?
This is easy! I would be Pippi Longstocking (she is a superhero, right?!) She leads a careless and adventurous life without worrying about things people easily tend to worry. She is an awesome girl and oh, so strong!

What does the future hold for you and your shop?
Honestly I cannot foretell what it will be. But I want to keep on working on my shop so that my customers can feel content dealing with me. I will work on my purse collection and perhaps add some textile accessories to match them. I'm always open for feedback!
