Spotlight: Belle Terre

There comes a time when a belief ceases to be an idea you agree with and it becomes something you live by. For the husband and wife team of Wayne & Julia, this time was the Spring of 2010. In the space of a few months, they bought 6 acres of land in the foothills of North Carolina and started Belle Terre, their little soap company.

They handcraft soap, lip balm, lotions and other related products. They use organic oils, recycled and/or recyclable packaging and donate 5% of sales to charity. What's not to love?

Read on to learn more about this environmental dynamic duo, what fuels their fire and where they want to be in the future. You can also enter to win a gift box of their products!

HELPING IN JAPAN

From now through Tuesday, March 22, Belle Terre is donating $1 from every item purchased to the American Red Cross to fund the relief effort in Japan. Has getting clean and smelling great ever felt so good? Hop on over to Belle Terre and pick up a few things for yourself and some gifts for others and help a good cause.

Where are you from originally and where do you currently call home?
Wayne is originally from Greensboro, NC and Julia hails from Toronto. We currently live in a little town called Lincolnton, in the western piedmont of North Carolina. We recently purchased some land in the NC foothills and hope to be migrating there in just a few years.

How long have you been selling your products?
Although we have been creating for a while, we have been officially selling our product since August of 2010.

Do you sell your craft full time or do you have a day job?
We both have a day job. Wayne works in retail management and Julia is a practice administrator at a medical office. Both our day jobs require us to be customer service focused, so it’s something that has become quite ingrained.

What, if any, formal training have you had in your art?
We have the ever practical training of trial and error =)

What made you decide to open up shop on Etsy?
Starting out we were looking for an outlet that would allow us to sell without having to be present, since we are both working full time. Julia has been an Etsy fanatic for quite some time so it only seemed natural to start selling there. Etsy has become one of our favorite venues because of the sense of community one has while shopping and selling. It is the most personal online experience we have found and we love that quality!

How did you come up with your shop name?
We wanted something that communicated our appreciation and concern for the earth. We also have a deep love for all things French, especially the food! Belle Terre (which translates to Beautiful Earth) seemed a nice fit.

Being a husband and wife team, who does what for the business?
Julia is the creative force behind what we do. She also has an incredible eye for detail (read: slightly nutty) so she handles the books. Although we share the production aspect of the business, Wayne does the bulk of the work. He also does the weekly farmers markets and packages most of the online orders. When we have big festivals or shows we enjoy doing these together. These are a blast and they become a working vacation, which is better than no vacation at all!

Alternatively, who does what around the house?
Generally we play a fun game of seeing who can do the least around the house. This typically results in us both doing about half which works out nicely.

Are there times when it is difficult working together?
Any business partnership is going to be hard at times — that's the nature of business and people. That said, we both have a pretty good sense of humor and manage to make each other laugh even when we’re at our wits end. I don’t think we’d choose to go into business with anyone else.

Do you have any advice for other sellers or those thinking about pursuing their craft?
Love what you do and do it in a way you can be proud of the end product. Putting a product out there that you adore is so very important. Since people on Etsy can’t touch, feel, and smell your product, good pictures are essential. And, of course, in any business customer service is key. If you can handle those few things, the rest will take care of itself!

HaveCameraWillTravel (the lovely Heather takes all our amazing photos!)

Five things you love
Being Alive
Each other
Our dogs (holly, sparky, maude and cassie) and our bees
Selling soap at farmers markets
Rosetta's Kitchen (in Asheville, NC)

Five things you don’t
Disregard for the earth
Cruelty to animals
Unnecessary violence
Mean people
Cooked carrots

Where is the coolest place you have ever been?
{Wayne} During a road trip with my brother Bobby we took a "shortcut" through the mountains just west of Los Alamos, New Mexico. The gravel road wound through the mountains and valleys of the Valles Caldera preserve. Along the way we pulled off on the narrow shoulder of the road near the top of a mountain. We climbed the rock until we got to the flattened peak where only a few small trees and shrubs were growing. We sat down and looked out for miles across the rugged landscape filled with mountain peaks and evergreens. We knew that only a handful of other people had ever had that view and that experience.

{Julia} I adore France. Always have. I have the fantastic experience of studying abroad for a semester in college and did quite a bit of traveling. While there, I visited two places I’ve never forgotten: Mont St. Michel (an incredible monastery) and Giverny (Monet’s Gardens). Last year Wayne and I went on a delayed honeymoon (five years in) and I took him to visit those very places. It was just as special the second time around. We wrote about our experiences on our travel blog: http://jwtravels.wordpress.com.

What is your favorite leisure time activity?
I’m sorry, what is leisure time? ; ) We love to travel and Julia adores reading. Even with our small amount of free time, she manages to squeeze in some books and is an avid user of goodreads.com and bookmooch.com. We’re both trying to teach ourselves the ukulele. Since it’s the first time either of us has played a stringed instrument, it’s an uphill battle.

Favorite junk food
Chocolate in almost any shape/size/fashion (we draw the line at chocolate covered bacon and bugs…we’re vegetarian and the bug thing is just slightly too much).

Share some of your favorite music?
Iron & Wine (our absolute favorite band…. no contest), The Weepies, Jake Shimabakuro, Indigo Girls

What would you like to learn?
To play the Ukulele….to speak more languages….to help others understand the importance of treating the earth well….

What does the future hold for you and your shop?
Personally we are aiming over the next few years to build our own small home on our land and begin our transition toward a truly sustainable lifestyle in which we eat only what we grow, use only the energy we collect, and share our home with the dogs, bees and other animals that will join us. We’re hoping our little soap company will help us get there.

Regarding Belle Terre: we will always be true to our guiding principles of sustainability, high quality and great service. To be honest, we will allow our customers to make a lot of decisions as to what products we offer. Between our small testing program and our facebook page, we’re always looking for and receiving good feedback. In the end, we just want our business to sustain a simple life for us and our dogs.

You can keep up with Wayne & Julia and all their sustainable efforts by following them on facebook and visiting their website.

My favorite item from Belle Terre is the Shampoo Bar for Normal/Dry Hair because that's what my hair is. I think it'd be nice to see more shampoo bars and stuff for dry hair with vanilla scents.

I follow on Facebook and I like Belle Terre on Facebook
